Old and New

check out the works of these contemporary illustrators:

James Jean

Josh Cochran

Matt Vincent

There are 2 parts in your drawing: the old and the new;

It can be something trendy against something out-dated; e.g. An old street with a lot of youngster/ a MAMAK store full with old and young people, etc.

  • Drawing Size: A3
  • Finishing: Neat B/W pencil drawing;
  • The drawing must show your understanding about Figure and Space;

    You are given 3-4 weeks to work on this project;
  • Week 01: Rough sketches
  • Week 02: Refining the pencil outline
  • Week 03: Add in shading
  • Week 04: Final touch-up Submit on 20 November 2008

My 3rd figure studies

Well, Well ,Well !!! Figure studies? Hahaha! It's means painting, [drawing] or sculpture made for study purposes with a live model as the subject matter. The live model can be clothed, partly clothed or nude and the art work is a representation of the full body of the model, or of multiple parts of the model (such as hands, or feet). Figure studies are usually completed in a relatively short length of time that can last from a few minutes up to a few hours. Therefore these studies often have a sketchy character. For more elaborate art works the term 'figure study' is not used; the art work is called nude, nude painting, figure piece or figure painting.

'Figure study' usually refers to an artist's finished work, but it can also be used to describe the creative process.

"The live model can be clothed, partly clothed or nude."

Figure study is a general term that leaves a critical, sensitive criteria unknown. Many artist do excellent figure studies and would not want to be thought to be doing art involving a nude. In the same manner, there are photographers who do figure studies that almost never include clothes. Figure study photographs without clothes are often called figure nude photographs to more precisely describe what can be a sensitive subject.

In the 1st lesson, our figure 3 lecturer, Mr Sio Yen had taught us about
8 elements of art and 8 principles of design.... Hehehe!!!

The 8 elements of art is dot, line, shape, form, space, texture and color

and

the 8 principles of design is repetition/pattern, proportion/size, harmony/unity, balance, contrast/opposition, rhythm,directional/movement and emphasis/center of interest/focus.

This is a motto by Maurice Denis:
"Document that a picture before being a battle horse, a nude, an anecdote or whatnot, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order."

That's all,thank u 4 viewing!

Sorry 4 late posting!

Will post d pic soon...

figure!figure!figure!

1st of all, sorry for the pic...got bit blur...anyway...for the figure lesson 1 remind me alot the thing that i had learnt in drawing 1 n 2 last sem...interesting...interesting...In the figure lesson 1,i had learnt a very classical sentences "remember that a picture, before being a battle horse a nude, an anecdote or what not, is essentially a flat surface with colors assembled in a certain order."by Maurice Denis...After that,my very nice lectural teach us 8 element of art and 8 principle of design...At the moment he teaching us,i feel that is it im go to the wrong class...the class suppose to be learnt about human body...why can become like this...after i continue listened...ya...im in the figure 3 class...

8 element of art:

1. dot
2. line
3. shape/face
4. form
5. value
6. texture
7. space
lastly, 8. colour

8 principle of design:

1. repetition/pattern
2. proportion/size
3. harmony/unity
4. balance
5. contrast/opposition
6. rhythm
7. directional movement
lastly 8. emphasis/center of interest/focus

after lectural explained these all to whole class, he asked us to drawmore than 2 figure in the class and played with the space in the classroom...after finished drawing, he also asked us to take photo to what we have draw...then he asked one class open one blog and all the student must put the work inside the blog...next...lectural ask all of us go back and prepared the picture plane A4 size by using mounting board...be4 we leave the class, he oso giv us 4 piece of various
standards of proportion...n the interesting is all the little baby to old folk...lastly.......................he oso dont forgot to reminded us go home to do 2 piece figure of protrait...

<--- figures & perspective view ...... .. .. in my class.

A Quote from Maurice Denis : " Remember that a picture, before being a battle horse, a nude, anecdote or whatnot, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order.''

An "artistic touched-up" drawing can be simplified into 8 elements of art .

Dot
Line
Shape
form
Value
Color
Space
texture.

Oh yea.8 principles of design as well..-_-

repetition/pattern
proportion/size
harmony/unity
balance
contrast/opposition
rhythm
directional movement
emphasis/focus

Merging figures n perspective will make the drawing more complete...n .. .nearly perfect.Lol.
anyway, im not reli satisfy with my..."masterpiece" , will try hard in the next lesson.

Sincerely,
wish u have a nice dream.its late nowzZZZZZ

Figure 3 class 12-9-2008

In 1st class of figure3, I have learnt a lot of basic about drawing.
Sio Yenn have been enchance what we learn before. I am very appreciate what he teach and remind.

" Remember that a picture, before being a battle horse, a anude, anecdote or whatnot, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order.'' Maurice Denis ..... after this will be the explanation as the following

1. dot
2. line
3. shape / face
4. form
5. value
6. texture
7. space
8. color

Besides that,

8 principles of design :
1. repetition / pattern
2. proportion / size
3. harmony / unity
4. balance
5. contrast / opposition
6. rhytm
7. directional movement
8. emphasis

Summary of  The 1st Lesson
We must remember that "a picture, before being a battle horse, a nude, an anecdote, or whatnot, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order". Besides that, as a designer, we must understand the 8 elements of arts, they are :
1. dot
2. line
3. shape / face
4. form
5. value
6. texture
7. space
8. color

and also 8 principles of design :
1. repetition / pattern
2. proportion / size
3. harmony / unity
4. balance
5. contrast / opposition
6. rhytm
7. directional movement
8. emphasis

Thank's ^^
Paulina Gunawan a.k.a Pauw" =)
Ya ! So.... another new sem ... figure studies 3 will be continues in our sem3. Ya. Our new lecturer SY such as a nice person, and our tutor, Ivan (new Bs) waha ...Ya is the 1st lesson.. so Sy was brief alots. and he taught us about the 8 elements of art and 8 principles of design in the in the 1st class. Before he explained the 8 elements, he was wrote a few sentences in whiteboard , there are " Remember that a picture, before being a battle horse, a anude, anecdote or whatnot, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order.'' Maurice Denis ..... after this will be the explanation as the following :

There are 8 elements of Art and 8 principles of Design.

The elements of Art consist of :

1. dot

2. line
3. shape / face
4. form
5. value
6. texture
7. space, and
8. color.

Whereas the principles of design comprise:

1. repetition / pattern
2. proportion / size
3. harmony / unity
4. balance
5. contrast / opposition
6. rhythm
7. directional movement
8. emphasis / center of interest / focus

After the explaining the theories above from SY, he asked us to do one exercise which was needed to draw more that 2 figures in class and play with the space , let me feel i was in class perspective studies .We finished drawing and were required to snap a picture of what we drew just now and to post on our class blog.Lastly, SY reminded us to prepare a picture plane of a A4 sized mounting board or card and a transparency with grids 1 x 1 inch'' and the border is 2 inches thick, and also he gave us 4 pieces of notes that various standards of proportion .. old folk to baby ~~

This way my spot ....
